Letter from the President
Nr 66
By Prof. Bruno Grandi, President of the FIG October 2012
Choice and Abandon!
My Friends,
In just a few short days I will have the honour and privilege, as well as the responsibility, of officially
opening the 79
th
FIG General Assembly. I look forward to such a symbolic time, ripe with vision,
and to which I have given my greatest attention.
Allow me to begin this letter by thanking my friends at the Mexican Federation for their effort and
hospitality; it is my hope that the facilities in Cancun will provide each of us with a backdrop that
fosters productive reflection and debate.
I invite you to a time of careful consideration and exchange as together we set the course that will
enable our Federation to develop, grow and thrive. Discussions will give birth to projects, choices
that will need to be approved through the only means I have ever imposed: direct democracy. We
will choose and we will vote just as we have always done, for it is not in my nature to ignore the
very democratic process that has until now underpinned our success.
From you, I expect strength, energy, imagination and the courage to embrace the reforms set
before you. You will shape the vision that will guide our Federation through the next cycle. I trust
that you will opt for competence, for individuals who strive toward the common good without
personal or partisan motive.
Our time in Cancun is significant on several levels. The FIG has positioned itself at the crossroads
of new communication technologies, which have impacted not only our perception of sport in
general but that of the public and media in particular. It was with my approval that the FIG took its
first steps toward new platforms and the advantages that would not be long in coming. We are now
seeing the first return on our investment.
Well aware of the work awaiting me in Cancun, I look forward to seeing many of you there, ready
to get down to business; historically, our Federation is a pillar in the Olympic Movement and it is
my hope that we would successfully continue in that tradition, as was recently the case at the
London Olympic Games.
I look forward to seeing you in Cancun.
Best wishes,
60
