Letter from the President
Nr 67
By Prof. Bruno Grandi, President of the FIG November 2012

In post-Cancun era!
Friends,
The FIG General Assembly democratically designated, with sovereign power, the authorities that
will lead our Federation through the 2013 2016 Cycle, affirming as it did its confidence in me; for
that I am ever grateful.
I am both honoured and fully aware of the scope of my responsibilities.
As I have said and written in the past, the upcoming cycle will be one of modernity, development of
new media, vitality from event reforms, and a return to the values that underpin our inheritance,
gymnastics for all. We will summon all the energy and competence we need, both old and new,
from the 2013 2016 authorities, and I ask that each and every one of you take up the challenge
ahead.
As the calendar would have it, the Codes of Points are a priority on my agenda. I am getting a
variety and increasing number of signals telling me to revisit the format and handling of our
competitions, which no longer meet the needs of our public. This is of utmost importance, truly an
existential issue for our future generations.
In Cancun my message was also one of justice in sport. I do not and cannot understand the
motives behind intentional error; cheating never pays. The negative image conveyed through
repeated incidents is detrimental to our community as a whole. The public, media and most
importantly the IOC will not be fooled!
Post-Cancun is a fresh canvas for the elected members of our Executive and technical bodies,
who are living proof of the extensive human resources available to us and who are ready and
willing to make commitments, on a volunteer basis I might add, for the good of gymnastics. To
those who have been elected, congratulations! I am grateful and look forward to working together.
Others decided to terminate their activities. Allow me to mention Koji Takizawa. Since his election
at the Congress in Zurich (SUI) in 1982, Koji has been a loyal advocate of our Federation and
gymnastics on the whole, serving the sport with commitment. I am grateful to him, and express my
admiration for his example of intellectual honesty, competence and Fair Play, which characterizes
the man that he is. His impact will remain visible in our sport for years to come.
I also extend my
thanks and gratitude to Atilla Orsel faithful companion for many years, which has always shown me
unwavering friendship and with whom I supported the project of Pierre Chabloz to create the
European Union of Gymnastics in 1982 as well.
2013 is looking passionate with the world championships that are sure to produce new athletes,
new talent that I can't wait to discover. Our athletes are my priority, and we owe them our
undivided attention.
With my compliments.
