Giorgio Garufi (ITA)

His memory will be remembered. Few people in the room realised just what a
contribution Giorgio Garufi has made to Italian and World Gymnastics over the
last 50 years.
Gymnast, judge, pedagogue / coach, academic, author (5 books on gymnastics),
official, and servant to many committees, Giorgio has held all positions; vice
President of the Italian Gymnastics Federation for 25 years serving FIG and its
President Prof. Bruno Grandi.
Born in Messina in Sicily (ITA) in 1935, he started Gymnastics in the local club and
when he qualified for University he continued with his Gymnastics career. He
moved to the city of Naples as a teacher on 1957 and in 1960 he was appointed
as a lecturer to the University of Naples (ISEF), where he taught and researched
for the next 40 years. He had two degrees qualifying in the French language in
the University of Claude Bernard in Lyon, France. He was fluent in 4 languages,
which had been a great asset in his ability to communicate internationally.
As a judge in Men's Artistic he represented Italy in two Olympic Games (Los
Angeles and Seoul), five Word Championships and numerous European and
major International competitions. He was invited as an expert to lead
International judges' courses in Egypt, Tunisia, Greece, Spain and, of course, his
home nation, Italy.
Giorgio was a member of the Committee from 1984 to 1992 and then Vice
President until his retirement in 2004. He served under Jean Willisegger (SUI) and
Margaret Sikkens Ahlquist /SWE) and has taken Educational courses on behalf of
General Gymnastics, now "Gymnastics for All" in all five continents.
