UNION EUROPEENNE DE GYMNASTIQUE
As the biggest gymnastic event worldwide, it also provided a backdrop for the 130
th
anniversary
celebration of the FIG's founding. The UEG being a much younger federation, we mark our 30
th
anniversary this year, the constitutive assembly having taken place March 27 28, 1982 in
Luxemburg!
I would like to express my sincere congratulations to the Asian Union, also celebrating 30 years in
2012!
This July and August will see the Games of the XXX Olympiad in London. Gymnasts have worked
hard and made great sacrifice to qualify for and experience such a unique event. After all, the
Olympic Games are the ultimate objective of any athlete.
The Games will also be an opportunity to applaud two exceptional gymnasts: Jordan Jovtchev,
President of the Bulgarian Gymnastics Federation and UEG Executive Committee member, and
Oksana Chusovitina (GER) have succeeded in qualifying for a sixth participation in the Olympic
Games! An extraordinary feat that deserves our deepest respect and hearty congratulations.
With every FIG authority member up for re-election, the Cancun Congress is of capital importance;
and as President of the European Gymnastic Union, I support the European candidates.
As happens at each FIG electoral Congress, the UEG "loses" a few of its members, those who
have decided to invest their time not only at the European level but at the international as well.
While their absence will be felt, we know that their collaboration will help strengthen the
relationship between the FIG and UEG Technical Committees and pave the way for even greater
mutual understanding. Good luck to the candidates!
With my compliments.
