whereabouts and doping controls conducted without notice, and in all applications for therapeutic
use exemptions etc.
This also places a burden of responsibility on the FIG's administrative services, which provide the
organisation with solid support in responding to WADA requirements.
The FIG carries out anti-doping controls throughout the World Championships and World Cups of
all of the disciplines, and since the start of the current cycle in 2009 we have successfully
completed almost 1,000 tests on gymnasts.
We have also seen a year-on-year increase in the number of unannounced out-of-competition
tests, with almost 300 carried out since 2009. These tests are traditionally conducted on urine
samples, although blood tests are now planned for certain disciplines. In addition, national
federations carry out their own controls, although the FIG must be informed of any positive results
and the manner in which they will be dealt with. The same applies to the continental unions and
various international multi-sport organisations. In every case, the FIG has the right to intervene,
particularly where sanctions are imposed.
On average, the FIG itself has two international cases every year, with another dozen taking place
via its affiliated national federations. It should be noted that the vast majority of doping cases
involve unintentional use. And since the start of the current cycle, there has been a significant fall
in the overall number of positive test results. Nevertheless, we remain ever vigilant and will
continue to impose suitable sanctions as required.
Since the beginning of the current cycle, we have also increased our collaboration with other
organisations in the fight against doping. This is the key to success. Thanks to our cooperation with
the likes of the IOC, WADA, ASOIF and a number of other national and international organisations,
the FIG is consulted on and involved in key decisions, changes to administrative regulations, and
the updating of the annual list of prohibited substances etc.
The health of our gymnasts remains one of our key priorities.
